Lanthanum is a member of the rare earth (lanthanide) series of metals. The carbonate salt of lanthanum has appeared to be an effective orally administered drug to trap phosphate in the gut and thereby reduce the phosphate absorption. Based on extensive research including clinical trials, lanthanum carbonate has been approved for human use both by the US FDA (2004) and by EU (2006) to reduce the elevated serum phosphate characterizing advanced renal failure.
N/A
A phosphate binder that reduces absorption of phosphate by forming insoluble lanthanum phosphate complexes that pass through the GI tract unabsorbed. Both serum phosphate and calcium phosphate product are reduced as a consequence of the reduced dietary phosphate absorption.
A phosphate binder indicated to reduce serum phosphate in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD)
The recommended initial total daily dose of FOSCURE is 1,500 mg in divided doses. Titrate every 2 to 3 weeks based on serum phosphate level. With or immediately after meals Chew or crush tablet completely before swallowing.
