Iron delivery via liposomes is a promising approach to treat anemia effectively. Liposomes are one of the effective drug carrier systems which potentially deliver different therapeutic substances to specific molecular targets. Their biocompatibility, biodegradability and low toxicity make them suitable for delivering drugs. Geroz-LP a brand of ferric pyrophosphate that uses liposomal technology (i.e. micronized iron is incorporated into a phospholipid membrane, a sort of protective “shell”) and as compared to other traditional oral formulations, liposomal technology protects iron from drug interactions, allows better gastrointestinal absorption, results in higher bioavailability of the iron with lower incidence of side effects.
